Hotel at a Glance: Seaside Inn

Seaside Inn got its start more than three centuries ago, when it was a stopping point for ferrymen along the Kennebunk River. Over the years, it's been revamped and rebuilt as a vacation destination, and remains the only inn set directly on Kennebunk Beach. The secluded Atlantic beachfront setting draws guests in, but the hospitality at Seaside Inn—which has been run by the same family for nine generations—keeps them coming back.

  • Ocean views: from the comfort of the outdoor hot tub
  • Continental breakfast: fresh fruit and home-baked sweets
  • Notable awards: TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence in 2012 and 2013
  • Claim to fame: the fifth-oldest family-run business in the United States, according to Family Business Magazine
  • Guest-room amenities: Queen Anne furnishings, free WiFi, and private patios; some look out onto the ocean

Kennebunkport, Maine: Coastal Village Lined with Centuries-Old Homes

Situated on the southern coast of Maine, Kennebunkport is more than 300 years old, with many homes dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the town is notable for being a summer destination for the well-heeled, including former president George H. W. Bush. Take a trolley ride to get a nice view of both Kennebunkport and its neighbor Kennebunk, as well as the coastline and a handful of beaches.

Kennebunkport's Dock Square is lined with art galleries, bookstores, and restaurants housed in classic New England clapboard buildings. Nearby, Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge stretches along 50 miles of coastline and acts as a sanctuary for migratory birds and runaway teen marine biologists. The refuge features nature trails that wind past a variety of habitats, including estuaries, salt marshes, and boreal forest.
