Property at a Glance: Skamania Lodge

Skamania Lodge takes its name from a Chinook word meaning “swift water.” The moniker is appropriate—the hotel overlooks the Columbia River Gorge. There's a high concentration of waterfalls here, including the country's fifth-highest. The lodge is situated on 175 wooded acres and surrounded by beautiful natural attractions. It serves as both a place to find solitude and a home base for hiking, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and many other recreational activities. It’s also surrounded by history—the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail is nearby, and Mount St. Helens is about a 60-mile drive away.

  • Admire forest views in your superior or fireplace-equipped fireside room.
  • Cozy up with a book in front of a towering stone fireplace in the lodge, whose architecture ropes in Montana slate, local rock, and natural and reclaimed timber.
  • Upscale dining options: Fodor's writes that the onsite "restaurants are some of the top dining experiences in the region." Columbia River steelhead and other regional dishes are on the menu at Skamania's award-winning Cascade Dining Room, while lighter dishes and shared plates take the spotlight at River Rock restaurant.
  • Take a refreshing dip in the indoor swimming pool (limited capacity)

Stevenson, Washington: Laid-Back Riverfront Town amid Massive Forest Preserve

A small, scenic town on the Columbia River Gorge, Stevenson was once a humble logging community. It has since evolved into a renowned year-round destination. Many visitors are drawn to Gifford Pinchot National Forest, an outdoor wonderland spread across 1.3 million acres where you can go fishing, hiking, biking, and picnicking.

The Columbia River Gorge is set amid the Cascade Range volcanoes, including Mount Hood, which is located about an hour away. It's Oregon's tallest peak and also home to the Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort.

We ended up with a river view room which I was super happy about. Staff was great, room was clean. We loved getting a drink at the bar then going out to the lawn and watching the sunset. We also watched the sunrise over the river right from the room. We used the fitness room, the putting course, and enjoyed one of the one site hiking trails.

We had a wonderful, relaxing stay. We have stayed many times at Skamania and this visit was just as enjoyable. There's always so much to do, even when it's raining. The scenery is spectacular, especially in the fall. And we always enjoy climbing Beacon Rock. The history of the area is fascinating as well. Our room was clean and well appointed and we love the view!!

Great Stay—Amazing Food and Even Better Hospitality We came for an anniversary getaway and had a wonderful time. The customer service was excellent—there was a mix-up with our room type that we discovered after checking in, but the hotel manager, April, went above and beyond to make it right. You could tell she genuinely cared about making sure we had a great experience. The food at the Cascade Grill was outstanding—one of the best meals we’ve had in a long time, especially the pork chop and lava cake. We were looking for a place where we could both relax indoors and enjoy nature, and this spot delivered. Between the hikes, golf, and outdoor fire pit, it was exactly what we needed.

Review of Skamania Lodge The location of this hotel was fabulous. My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and wanted to get away from the city to enjoy nature — this property came highly recommended. While the staff was exceptional and everyone did their best to make our visit memorable, I was a bit disappointed with the room setup and some of the facilities. The room was clean, but one of the bedside lamps wasn’t working, and the heater didn’t function properly. We called maintenance, but the issue temporarily resolved itself, so we canceled the service request. Unfortunately, the heater stopped working again later that night. I mentioned this at checkout, and the response was that the weather had been warm and this was the first weekend guests were using the heaters. Okay... I intentionally paid extra for a river-view fireplace deluxe room, hoping for a more comfortable setting, but the bed was positioned right next to the adjoining door to the next room. It might be convenient for a family, but for us, it felt awkward, and the room itself was smaller than expected. After paying $346 for one night, I felt the room condition didn’t quite match the price — a regular room probably would’ve been just as good. That said, the location was great, and we truly enjoyed the beautiful fall foliage. However, if you’re expecting a luxurious experience at over $300 per night, I’d suggest setting your expectations accordingly.
