Pacific Northwest Lodge with Heated Indoor Pool and Award-Winning Restaurant

Skamania Lodge takes its name from a Chinook word meaning “swift water.” The borrowed moniker is appropriate—the hotel overlooks the Columbia River Gorge. There's a high concentration of waterfalls around this gorge, including the fifth-highest waterfall in the country. The lodge is situated on 175 wooded acres and surrounded by beautiful natural attractions; it serves as both a place to find solitude and a home base for snowshoeing and downhill and cross-country skiing. It’s also surrounded by history—the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail is nearby, and Mount St. Helens is about a 60-mile drive away.

Montana slate, local rock, and natural and reclaimed timber feature prominently in the lodge's architecture. Inside, original artwork and petroglyph rubbings depict local Native American history and the flannel styles of lumberjacks throughout history. In the lobby—equipped with vaulted ceilings—you can relax in an oversize chair in front of the towering stone fireplace or admire mountain views through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Superior guest rooms overlook forests or the Columbia River. You can enjoy regional cuisine such as grilled steelhead at Skamania's award-winning Cascade Dining Room, whose decor of exposed wood and iron was inspired by national-park lodges. The restaurant River Rock serves lighter dishes, including salads, sandwiches, and pizza. Nearby, the hotel's Waterleaf Spa offers soothing treatments including a purifying facial and a hot-stone massage.

Stevenson, Washington: Laid-Back Riverfront Town amid Massive Forest Preserve and Top-Notch Skiing

A small, scenic town on the Columbia River Gorge, Stevenson was once a humble logging community, but has since evolved into a renowned year-round destination. Many of the visitors are drawn to Gifford Pinchot National Forest, just 2 miles from the hotel. It's an outdoor wonderland, spread across 1.3 million acres, where you can cross-country ski, sled, snowshoe, and snowmobile.

The Columbia River Gorge is sprawled amid the Cascade Range Volcanoes, including Mount Hood, which is located about an hour away. It's Oregon's tallest peak and also home to the Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort. In addition to more than 2,000 skiable acres, 85 runs, and multiple terrain parks, the ski resort is one of the few in the country to offer a sizable swath of night skiing—140 acres’ worth.
