Spacious Bavarian Lodges in the Rocky Mountains

When the first of the Foreman family’s mountain lodges burned down in 1998, the family rebuilt, redesigned, and expanded the property using 250,000 pounds of handpicked douglas-fir logs from the surrounding White River National Forest. This time, the building was constructed with families and large groups in mind—so you can now find six bedrooms, two living rooms, and a spacious covered porch here. Known as Summit Peaks Lodge South, this building became the first of four Summit Peaks and Riverside Lodges—all of which offer the same roominess and solitude in the Colorado mountain wilderness.

A stretch of the Blue River passes through the backyard of the east and west lodges, which feature whitewashed exteriors and wood-beam accents resembling rustic Bavarian lodges. During the autumn, gas fireplaces help to keep the chill out.

A complimentary shuttle stops at each lodge to ferry passengers to nearby attractions. After an afternoon of mountain biking through the forest, you can head to the Silverthorne Recreation Center (extra fees) to play a game of racquetball or relax in the hot tub. And because each property is close to the forest, you may even see elk, bighorn sheep, and other indigenous animals during your stay.

Positioned right next to the 2.3-million-acre White River National Forest in central Colorado, the town of Silverthorne serves as a gateway to several of North America's most renowned ski resorts, which are just as picturesque in the summer and autumn. Arapahoe Basin, Loveland, Keystone, and Breckenridge all lie within a half-hour drive. At Keystone, you can see the Continental Divide while riding the resort’s scenic lift. And some trails loop around the massive Dillon Reservoir, past the cities of Dillon and Frisco.

Though each mountain town boasts its own restaurants and après-ski activities, Breckenridge stands out for its quaint main street lined with century-old brick façades. You’ll find shops stocked with mountaineering gear and saloons that once catered to gold miners. And the some of the area’s best fall foliage can be found a few miles south of town at Boreas Pass.
