Old-Fashioned Inn in Historical Coastal Maine

Founded in 1647 as a colonial fishing town, Kittery became known for its shipbuilding industry, specifically for naval vessels. Here you’ll find the historical Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, established in 1800 by president John Adams. Coachman Inn fits right in with Kittery's historical, small-town charm. A short trek from the inn, you can stroll tranquil beaches, shop for antiques, or peruse hiking gear at the Kittery Trading Post, a beloved town landmark since the 1930s.

In the inn's guest rooms, floral accents, old-fashioned wooden headboards, and colonial-style furnishings lend a countryside charm. For breakfast, dine on strudel, danishes, and fresh fruit. The expanded continental breakfast lasts until 11 a.m.

In the Spruce Creek room, a big-screen TV and an assortment of checkers, chess, and other board games keep visitors entertained. Outside, an old-fashioned gas-lamp replica illuminates the grounds surrounding the heated outdoor pool. The pool stays open from sunrise until sundown, but staff can open it earlier to accommodate guests.

Kittery, Maine: Coastal Town with More than 350 Years of History

Located on Maine’s southern coast along the Piscataqua River, Kittery encompasses several islands in addition to the mainland, including Seavey's Island, the site of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. You can still visit the shipyard or explore a naval museum at Fort McClary, a stronghold during the War of 1812. If you're not a history buff, it’s worth it to simply hike or bike the rocky beaches along the Atlantic Coast and Piscataqua River.

Farther inland, you'll find colonial buildings and cobblestone streets. Local small businesses range from quaint bakeries and antique shops to restaurants serving famous Maine lobster. The best-known shop in town may be the Kittery Trading Post, which started as a one-room store in 1938 and has grown to include three stories of sporting equipment, hunting gear, gourmet foods, and home decor.
