The Lombardy: 1920s Boutique Hotel in Trendy Midtown Manhattan

In 1926, newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst owned and occupied The Lombardy, an upscale high-rise in New York City’s Midtown Manhattan. At that time, the area was a center for Roaring Twenties extravagance; real-life Great Gatsby types hosted parties in the parlors and art-deco skyscrapers along Park Avenue. A-list guests would attend these parties, such as the Vanderbilts and Hearst himself, who is said to be the inspiration for the lead character in the film Citizen Kane.

The Lombardy building retains the classic feel of that era and is just a short walk from Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Times Square, and other attractions in Manhattan dynamic cultural scene. There’s an old-fashioned elegance to the lobby of The Lombardy; it’s decorated with mirrored walls and gilded candelabras. Head to the elevator, and you’ll find a white-gloved attendant ready to escort you to your suite. Hollywood power couple Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton would ride these elevators frequently during the time they lived in The Lombardy.

Each king suite features its own distinctively luxurious decor, such as brocade curtains, button-backed chairs, mirrored headboards, or sleigh beds piled with satiny pillows. Some rooms have marble foyers and bathrooms. There's no onsite restaurant, but each suite is outfitted with a kitchenette, and the hotel concierge can reserve a table at one of Manhattan's finest restaurants, many of which are within walking distance.

Upper East Side and Midtown East: Unparalleled Fashion, Art, and Theater in Bustling Manhattan

The cultural core of the Big Apple, Midtown Manhattan buzzes with nonstop activity. Tourists come in droves to take snapshots of the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, and the Chrysler Building. At Times Square and in the Broadway District, stories-high advertisements tout shows at legendary theaters that coexist with kitschy souvenir stores.

On Central Park’s eastern edge, Fifth Avenue is an excellent spot to walk around and people watch. Peek in to art galleries along 39th Street to 60th Street as you make your way up to The Frick Collection at 70th Street, a mansion-turned-museum housing European masterpieces, including work from El Greco, Rembrandt, Renoir, Velázquez, and Regis Philbin. Many of the city's Zagat-rated restaurants and upscale boutiques are also located along Fifth Avenue, including Tiffany, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Gucci.
