Port Washington, Wisconsin: Historic Port Town Dating to the Mid-1800s
Port Washington has been a thriving port town along Lake Michigan since the middle of the 19th century. Its historic downtown features many venerable buildings, some of which pre-date the Civil War. The Victorian-style Eghart House and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, among others, offer tours to the public. A short stroll to the waterfront brings you to the 1860 Light Station, which helped guide ships safely to Port Washington’s harbor. Today, it serves as a museum showcasing the life of a 19th-century lighthouse-keeper.
Two sandy beaches, dubbed North Beach and South Beach, are popular warm-weather spots for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. Head the the Port Washington Marina to hire salmon- and trout-fishing charters or dock your boat at one of 220 deep-water slips. From here, you can pick up the Ozaukee Interurban Trail, a 30-mile paved path that connects the communities of Ozaukee County to Milwaukee. Most of the trail is off-road, making it ideal for jogging and biking in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter.
