Modern Boutique Hotel with Trendy Nightlife Scene

Since it opened in 2010, the Thompson Toronto Hotel has emerged as one of the city’s most stylish hotels, landing a spot on Condé Nast Traveler’s list of the world’s best new hotels. Leather furnishings, richly grained woods, and edgy fashion photographs have been incorporated into its sleek design. But what truly distinguishes the hotel is its glamorous party vibe: there’s a rooftop bar, a moody underground lounge, and a 21st-century diner that serves spiked milk shakes 24 hours a day. Yet the boutique hotel also has a more refined side, seen in its upscale restaurant and wellness spa.

On top of the 16-story building, Thompson’s rooftop lounge is one of the city’s hottest hangout spots; here you can admire panoramic views of downtown. A club scene emerges at night, complete with bouncers, bottle service, and a polished dress code. For a more low-key vibe, head down to 1812 Lounge in the hotel basement. Here, chocolate leather booths, velvet pillows, and oversize Victorian portraits welcome those venturing underground.

There’s also a trio of vastly different restaurants. Led by culinary master Scott Conant—who’s been named a Best New Chef by Food & Wine and earned nominations for James Beard Foundation awards—Scarpetta serves rustic Italian dishes such as duck and foie gras ravioli and creamy polenta with fricassee of truffled mushrooms. The venue itself is a work of art, with floor-to-ceiling windows, textured walls, and a patio-side reflecting pool. You can get breakfast 24 hours a day at Thompson Diner, a classic retro spot that serves dressed-up burgers and spiked milk shakes. Nearly 60 specialty maki rolls anchor the fusion menu nearby at Wabora Sushi.

Thompson Toronto Hotel’s spacious king superior guest rooms are a study in modern luxury, from the floor-to-ceiling windows to the heated marble bathroom floors. All-white walls contrast with dark mahogany floors, and futuristic orange furniture adds a splash of color. Guests can also find solace in the hotel’s sun-drenched yoga studio or at the Ayurveda-inspired spa.

Toronto, Ontario: Cosmopolitan City with World-Class Museums and Waterfront Parks

Thompson Toronto Hotel sits in the heart of the city’s Fashion District, a hip downtown neighborhood that was once a textile-manufacturing hub. Thanks to an urban revival that began in the 1980s, the warehouses and old factories that sat empty for years now house upscale restaurants, galleries, and cutting-edge boutiques selling apparel at wholesale prices. This transformation has also led to a surge in sleek residential units and loft-style developments, many of which are situated around Victoria Memorial Square. The bars and clubs on King Street West and Queen Street West have propelled the area into the forefront of the city’s social scene.

A northerly stroll through the Fashion District will take you to Kensington Market, a bohemian village filled with vintage shops and organic-food markets. The nearby Art Gallery of Toronto exhibits an astounding collection of work from Canadian artists and European masters in a Frank Gehry–designed building that centers on a circular floating staircase. Toronto is also known as a city of gardens, and you’ll find one of its best—the Toronto Music Garden—stretched out along the waterfront less than a mile south of the hotel. Designed in part by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the music garden translates the music of Bach through beautiful landscaped installations, including a winding river and giant grass steps.
