Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Wuhan & Yangtze River: Bustling Cities, Canals & Elaborate Gardens

At over 3,900 miles, China's Yangtze River is the third-longest river in the world—only the Nile and the Amazon are longer. The river winds through majestic gorges, past ancient villages and the thriving metropolis of Shanghai. With Rewards Travel China’s 14-day tour, you’ll explore Shanghai and its surrounding gardens and towns before cruising down the mighty Yangtze.

Days 1–3:

After arriving in Shanghai, you’ll be escorted to the elegant Courtyard Marriott Shanghai. The next day, head to Shanghai's iconic Bund, a postcard-ready waterfront district on the banks of the Huangpu River. Here, you’ll see the area’s signature mix of renaissance, Gothic, and baroque architecture set alongside futuristic buildings. For a flashy spectacle, don’t miss the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel, where train cars zip through a tunnel lit with flashing lights and special effects.

Next, the tour heads to nearby Suzhou, a breathtaking city with meandering canals and classical Chinese gardens, inspiring some to call it the "Venice of the Orient." Commissioned in the late 16th-century, the city’s Lingering Garden spans more than five acres of well-manicured bamboo groves, waterside pagodas, and Buddhist sculptures. After you leave the gardens, you'll float along the 2,000-year-old Grand Canal, the world's longest manmade canal.

Day 4: Your first stop is the Master of Nets Garden, where bridges cross over pathways fringed with blooming laurel, peony, and cypress plants. At night, witness a quintessential Chinese scene—hanging lanterns lighting up in the gardens while costumed performers dance to folk music. After a brief stop at a local silk factory, the tour spends the rest of the day in the town of Tongli, where more than 40 stone bridges connect small islets surrounded by glistening rivers and lakes.

Days 5–6: In the morning, the trip heads west to Wuxi, a city that rests on the shores of Tai Lake, known for its massive, 80-meter-high bronze Buddha statue. After spending the night at the Landison Plaza Hotel Wuxi, you'll set out for Hangzhou, often referred to as heaven on earth. It's easy to see how the town’s ethereal beauty inspired ancient poets at West Lake, where lotus blossoms and weeping willows border the placid waters. While you’re here, take advantage of the scenic setting by watching the sun set or the moon rise over the lake’s strikingly reflective surface.

Days 7–8: Journey to a traditional tea village to see how farmers pick and harvest fresh tea leaves. While here, you can smell the fresh herbs and sample wild teas at the local teahouses.

The next day, you’ll return to Shanghai to immerse yourself in its rich culture. The Shanghai Museum boasts an immaculate collection of bronze sculptures, ancient calligraphy, and jade carvings dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Afterward, the group will browse souvenirs and crafts at the City God Temple bazaar before watching high-flying stunts at the Shanghai Acrobatic Show.

Days 9–13:

Fly to Wuhan bright and early to set out on your Yangtze River cruise. The Yangtze River winds past dynamic cities, quiet villages, and stunning gorges. During the four-day cruise, you'll dock from time to time to explore the shoreline's rugged landscape, including stops at the rocky Shennong Stream and the Fengdu ghost city, where you’ll explore dozens of macabre temples that focus on gods of the underworld.

Day 14:

Your final leg of the voyage wraps up when you board your homeward flight in Shanghai.
