This was a great trip! I would buy it again! It was the perfect mix of in the rainforest and on the beach, between structured activities and having the freedom to choose what we did.

8-Day Costa Rica Vacation

You'll explore Costa Rica's jungles, beaches, and capital city on this 7-night vacation from Travel by Jen. Pick up your rental car in San Jose, and then make your way to each city at your leisure. The vacation includes:

  • Round-trip airfare from FLL, NYC, LAX, Washington D.C., BOS or Chicago
  • 3-night stay at Lomas del Volcan in Arenal with breakfast
  • 3-night all-inclusive stay at Allegro Papagayo in Guanacaste
  • 1-night stay at Hotel Autentico in San Jose with breakfast
  • Economy manual car rental

Days 1–3: La Fortuna

Driving time to La Fortuna from SJO : about 3 hours

La Fortuna sits in the shadow of Arenal Volcano, a giant stratovolcano that, until 2010, was highly active. You won't see much lava nowadays, but Arenal's rainforest hikes, mineral hot springs, and craggy lava fields make it well worth a visit.

  • Where you'll stay: Lomas del Volcan. Each of the wood cabins at this rustic retreat have private decks overlooking the volcano. Guests can also view the volcano from the outdoor pool, restaurant, and cocktail bar.
  • What to see and do: There's a 1-mile trail on the resort grounds that wends through the surrounding rainforest. You can also book guided tours of Arenal Volcano, Fortuna River Waterfall, and the rainforest canopy from the front desk (extra fees may apply).

Days 4–6: Guanacaste

Driving time to Guanacaste from the Arenal area: about 3 hours

Located along the Papagayo Gulf in the province of Guanacaste—so named for its abundance of umbrella-shaped Guanacaste trees—Culebra Bay is ringed by sandy beaches and luxury resorts. The bay's calm, clear waters are perfect for swimming.

  • Where you'll stay: Allegro Papagayo. This all-inclusive resort boasts 3 restaurants with unlimited food and drinks, a large pool with poolside bar, and a picturesque stretch of beachfront where guests can play volleyball and kayak.
  • What to see and do: Book a snorkeling, diving, or boat trip through the resort to see more of Costa Rica's Pacific coastline (extra fees may apply).

Day 7: San José

Driving time to San José from Guanacaste: about 3.5 hours

The country's capital city is often overlooked in favor of Costa Rica's golden-sand beaches and jungle adventures, but it's worth a visit for its historic neighborhoods and bustling open-air markets. Barrio Amón, one of San José’s oldest neighborhoods, is a particularly nice place to take a stroll and sample street foods, such as tamales and stuffed flatbreads called pupusas.

  • Where you'll stay: Hotel Autentico. Rooms at this boutique hotel have a modern vibe, with bright-orange accents and passport stamps painted on the walls. The hotel also features an outdoor pool and restaurant with a Costa Rican tasting menu.
  • What to see and do: Hit up the Gold Museum and the Jade Museum, which center around two of the most valuable commodities in the pre-Columbian cultures of Mexico and South America. Both also showcase an impressive collection of indigenous artwork.

Day 8: Return to USA
