Costa Rica Beach and Jungle Vacation
On this 7-day vacation from Travel by Jen, you’ll drive a manual-shift rental car between two very different Costa Rican cities: a pretty beach town and a rainforest town in the shadow of a volcano. The vacation includes:
- Round-trip airfare from FLL, New York, Chicago, DFW, BOS, LAX, ATL, or Washington D.C.
- 3 nights of standard accommodations at the Marriott Los Sueños Ocean & Golf Resort in Herradura
- 3 nights of standard accommodations at the Nayara Hotel, Spa & Gardens in Arenal Volcano National Park with breakfast, outdoor showers, and volcano-view Jacuzzi hot tubs.
- Manual car rental
Days 1–3: La Fortuna
Hop into your included rental car to make the scenic, three-hour drive to La Fortuna. This rural town stands in the shadow of Arenal Volcano, a giant stratovolcano that, until 2010, was highly active. You won’t see much lava nowadays, but Arenal’s rainforest hikes, mineral hot springs, and craggy lava fields make it well worth a visit.
- Volcanic vents heat the many hot springs around Arenal to temperatures of up to 100 degrees. Some hot springs have been equipped with swim-up bars and water slides.
- Go on an adventure: There are lots of opportunities for ziplining and whitewater rafting excursions, rugged hikes, and cultural tours in the region.
- Hotel amenities: three restaurants, an outdoor pool and poolside bar, and a spa with open-air treatment rooms
Days 4–7: Herradura
Herradura overlooks a horseshoe-shaped beach of the same name—”herradura” means “horseshoe” in Spanish—with calm waters that are ideal for swimming. Those looking for bigger waves can head 6 miles south to Jacó, a popular surfing spot among locals and visitors.
- Keep your eyes peeled for toucans, macaws, and herons in the mangrove forests of Carara National Park.
- Eat like a local: Feast on fresh red snapper, shrimp, and lobster at the town’s many seafood restaurants.
- Hotel amenities: six restaurants and lounges, an 18-hole golf course, outdoor swimming pools, and a spa with a steam room
Know Before You Go
- Official language: Spanish
- Currency: colón
- Time difference: 1 hour (2 hours during Daylight Saving Time) behind Eastern Standard Time
