Lodge-Style B & B Alongside Sabinal River

An 850-year old cypress tree, 29 feet in circumference, towers over the lawn behind Utopia on the River. The surrounding Hill Country’s natural splendor is central to the bed and breakfast: the Sabinal River runs right alongside the hotel, its waters trickling by at a leisurely pace. Fishers and swimmers alike line the 700 feet of riverfront, and along the shore, you may even find arrowheads and fossils.

The secluded B & B’s pace matches that of its adjacent river—while away the day sitting in rocking chairs out front, or spend the night counting fireflies and gazing at the blanket of twinkling stars hanging overhead. Local wildlife often ambles by, such as axis and white-tailed deer and wild turkeys. The owners serve a complimentary breakfast buffet in the sun-filled Great Lodge; house favorites include baked-apple-and-cinnamon french toast, rancher scrambled eggs, and hot peaches and biscuits.

Each of the 12 guest rooms are individually decorated and named for one of Utopia’s early settlers. The Ware room is named after Captain William Ware, who packed all of his possessions and neck pillows into a wagon and settled here in the 1850s. Two full beds and rocking chairs face the window, which overlooks the black-bottomed, lagoon-style pool and hot tub.

Utopia, Texas: Quiet Hill Country Town

Although it’s less than 90 miles from San Antonio, Utopia feels as though it’s a world away. The Hill Country is known for its rugged canyons, streams, and wildlife. Most who visit here come for the fishing and camping, and the fall foliage at Lost Maples State Natural Area attracts hikers and photographers.

Just a few years ago, Robert Duvall and Lucas Black shot Seven Days in Utopia here, shining a spotlight on the town’s golf course. The naturally hilly terrain makes for a challenging and scenic backdrop for those teeing off at the town’s nine-hole course.
