Lush Tropical Oasis on Hillside Lined with Rainforest

Almost everywhere you turn at Villa Caletas hotel, you can get a panoramic view of the crystal blue waters off the western coast of Costa Rica. It helps that the hotel is perched 1,150 feet above the Pacific's Nicoya Gulf. But if you want to see the water up close, there's a secluded beach located 1 mile away. It's easily accessible if you take the hotel's complimentary shuttle, which runs hourly.

There's plenty to do even when you're not lounging at the beach. The resort has a friendly concierge desk staff, and they can arrange everything from a relaxing massage at the onsite spa to tours of the Costa Rican rainforest.

Meanwhile, Mirador Restaurant serves fresh seafood, including grilled salmon and red-snapper rolls, as well as turf entrees such as duck breast and beef tenderloin. It's worth it to head to the infinity pool, which has a mini waterfall, an island covered with tropical foliage, and stunning views of the Pacific,

Each of Villa Caletas's junior suites connects to a private terrace that overlooks the ocean or mountains. On the balcony, a private jacuzzi provides a setting for a romantic soak under the clear night sky or a beginner-friendly game of Marco Polo.

Staff Q & A: Costa Rica's West Coast

Shelby B. is a deal qualifier for Groupon Getaways. Below, she shares her thoughts on the hospitable natives, delicious coffee, and dazzling sunsets of Costa Rica.

Describe your perfect day in Costa Rica. My perfect day would just be relaxing in the sun and taking in the rainforest scenery. I would definitely have to make sure that I ended the day watching the sunset over the ocean. I have never seen a more beautiful sunset. The sky turns bright pink and orange—it's a must-see.

What's the most authentic souvenir you could bring back? Coffee! Coffee is one of Costa Rica's main exports and could not be more delicious. I picked up bags to bring home as gifts for friends and kept some for myself. It's not expensive either.

Describe your most interesting encounter here. The people are so friendly. I had a 30-minute conversation with a cab driver about the history of the area, the animals, and the rainforest. Everyone I met was super nice and willing to help point me in the right direction. It's also interesting to meet people who visited Costa Rica for vacation, fell in love with the country, and never left. They come in handy with the language barrier, too.

What should someone read, listen to, or watch to mentally prepare for a visit? Jurassic Park. After all, the story begins off the coast of Costa Rica, so why not? Otherwise, brush up on your Spanish and get ready to turn your brain off for a couple of days.
