Beachside Costa Rican Retreat Surrounded by Rainforest

Unlike waves at most beaches on the northern coast of Costa Rica, the waves that roll into the horseshoe-shaped bay near Playa Samara are relatively calm and easily navigable. Guests of the waterfront Villas Playa Samara take advantage of this phenomenon on kayaking tours—one of many onsite activities available—that send paddlers skimming over the ocean, just a few feet above colorful coral reefs. Located far from urban bustle and surrounded by 200 acres of tropical jungle, the resort makes a relaxing home base for adventures by land or sea.

Villas Playa Samara resembles a Spanish-style village with its white stucco walls, red tile roofs, and wild herds of matadors roaming the grounds. Deluxe garden-view rooms lie only steps from the beach and come furnished with private terraces. The onsite Arrecife Restaurante offers inviting island views on its patio, where diners can sample international cuisine and traditional Costa Rican breakfasts consisting of gallo pinto, maple ham, and fiambres.

Samara Beach, Costa Rica: Coral Reefs and Rainforest Adventure

Villas Playa Samara makes it easy to book an array of outdoor adventures in the rainforest or on the crescent-shaped beach. A bookable three-hour kayak trip features a guided sojourn to Isla Chora—a secluded island with shores composed of pink and white sand. Snorkeling through the crystal-clear waters along the bay provides an up-close look at tropical marine life such as hermit crabs.

Mountain-biking and ziplining tours take explorers deep into the jungle. A float down one of the rainforest’s rivers may supply glimpses of howler monkeys and iguanas. Anglers can take to the Pacific on sport-fishing charters, which steer to big-game fishing spots. Even novices stand a fair chance of hooking tuna and mahi-mahi or wrestling with a trophy-size plankton in the boat's fighting chair.

The Hotel Playa Samara was lacking. The setting was nice, but not having towel service for 3 days was a real problem especially given how humid it is. Also, we had to use all of our towels to dry up the bathroom floor because there are no shower curtains! In addition, the staff didn't seem to care about the guests needs and never responded to our problems even when they said they would. The inclusion of Nicaragua on the new tour was nice but I think that the amount of time spent in the bus needs to be clearer from the start. Our tour (Nov 19th) schedule was changed around and I think that we missed things that were included on the original itinerary as a result. This was disappointing.

The tour was great. The trip to Nicaragua is pretty long and some additional activities in Costa Rica could probably be substituted for this portion, so you don't spend so much time crossing the border, etc.

First few days were wonderful and fun, but last days slow, needed some scheduled activities included into the package price. Last hotel needed a shuttle, phone in room for emergency or for a wake up call---TV would be nice too. The Escalon Hotel was amazing---better if we could have stayed there an additional day. Staff was great, food was good and overall I truly enjoyed this trip.

Pictures are over priced and certainly not worth the money, poor quality.
