Trip at a Glance: Waterfall Resort Alaska near Ketchikan, AK

A major commercial fishing destination for more than a century, Ketchikan, Alaska attracts thousands of anglers annually who come to catch king salmon, coho, Pacific halibut, lingcod, and red snapper. With prime location on Prince of Wales Island’s west coast—and a quick sea-plane ride from Ketchikan proper—The Waterfall Resort Alaska offers unforgettable sport-fishing trips amid the mountainous islands of southern Alaska. The resort’s expert guides know the waters off of Prince of Wales Island, and lead daily expeditions that promise silver-skinned rewards.

On this three-day, two-night trip, you’ll go on guided fishing expeditions each day, with all meals, accommodations, and supplies included.

We’ve listed some trip highlights below. Click here to see a sample itinerary.

  • The Fish Finding Fleet: The resort’s custom-designed armada includes 27 Almar aluminum 25-foot Cabin Cruises designed with passenger comfort and safety in mind. Shock-absorbing double seats make for a comfy ride, while the included accommodations have heated cabins and state-of-the-art electronics to provide additional comforts.

  • Dinner for Days: The fish you catch will be carefully filleted and cleaned almost as soon as you’re done catching them. Cooking-size portions are vacuum-packed, labeled, and flash-frozen to lock in freshness. Fish are then boxed and can be checked as luggage for the plane ride home.

  • Comfortable waterfall cabin or lodge: Accommodations are located close to the action, some situated just off the water. The lodge and the waterfall cabins were built in 1912.

  • Onsite dining: Chef Tim Chappell prepares the resort’s all-inclusive gourmet meals, which include prime cuts and fresh Alaskan seafood. Meals are served in the guest dining room, overlooking the Ulloa Channel.

  • Grab a drink: Each evening, the resort’s veteran mixologist pours drinks in the Waterfall Resort Lagoon Saloon, where guests swap stories and play cards, pool, ping pong, and darts, or watch the large-screen TV.

  • Meet the Team: The resort features a 1:1 staff-to-guest ratio, which means plenty of personalized attention. Many of the staffers have been with the resort for years.

  • Recommended hiking: Mix up the routine with a 1.5-mile hike to the resort’s namesake waterfall. On this sandy beach trek, black bear sightings are a regular occurrence.

Southeastern Alaska: Untouched Wilderness and the “Salmon Capital of the World”

The Waterfall Resort Alaska is surrounded by the wilderness of the Tongass National Forest—the United State's largest national forest. You could spend an entire day viewing the area's abundant wildlife, from moose and black bears to the whales that migrate here from May to September. Other popular activities here include hiking through more than 700 miles of trails and big-game hunting.

In order to get to The Waterfall Resort Alaska, you'll have to stop in Ketchikan, where you'll take a 45-minute sea plane ride to the resort. The southeastern-most city in Alaska, Ketchikan sits on Revillagigedo Island, which along with several nearby islands forms a mini-archipelago off of the larger Prince of Wales Island. Nicknamed the “Salmon Capital of the World,” life in Ketchikan revolves around fishing. A network of channels, inlets, and bays separates the landmasses and supports the area’s population of king salmon. You can only reach Ketchikan via ferry boat or plane.
