About Movado
The name a 19-year-old Swiss entrepreneur gave his fledgling company—Movado—had a carefully considered meaning: always in motion, like time, the hands of a clock, and presumably the young innovator himself, who began the company in 1881 with just six watchmakers. A zeal for design elevated the brand from its competition. In the 1940s, artist Nathan George Horwitt created the Museum watch, which featured a single dot at the top of the bare dial. Working to recast “time as design,” the watch brought to mind a sun, a moon, or perhaps just a sleeping pill.
Today, artful Movado watches are housed in museum collections around the world, and the company holds more than 100 patents on watch technology and design. The company continues to craft watches exclusively, expanding its repertoire to include styles for men, women, and athletes.
