“My only hobby is shoes and always has been,” confides Charles Malka of Charles David. Indeed, shoes have been the source of the CEO’s livelihood since he was 13 years old. He started out as a humble employee for a French footwear chain, after a failed attempt at selling lemonade served in lady’s shoes. A few years later, Charles packed his bags for Canada, where he founded his own shoe line in 1967. Sexy, on-trend heels became the brand’s staple and earned Charles David the reputation necessary to open its first US boutique on LA’s Melrose Avenue in 1988. Today, the brand has expanded to include handbags as well as men’s footwear.
