Converse
In 1908, Marquis Mills Converse realized there was money to be made in rubber. His company only manufactured two products—tires and sneakers for a new sport called basketball. In the 1920s, basketball player Chuck Taylor—today a Hall of Famer—signed on to promote the company’s newest shoe, the All Star. Its sporty yet simple design showcased a diamond-patterned sole that darted up and down the court with a responsive squeak.
Throughout the 20th century, the sneaker’s basic architecture remained the same even as its exterior changed to reflect the fashion trends of its time. During the '50s mania for rock ‘n’ roll, it transformed into a high-top. In the '60s, the shoe emerged in vibrant colors and motifs, including a British Invasion–themed style sported by fans of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and afternoon tea. A bold star icon tattooed the side of the sneaker in the '70s, when they became synonymous with punk counterculture. Eventually, Converse expanded its repertoire to include edgy clothing and accessories, and its iconic sneaker now comes in dozens of colors and patterns ranging from Dr. Seuss–inspired high-tops to glow-in-the-dark low-tops. Even so, they still make a classic black All Star, marked with the same signature diamond-patterned sole.
This collection of watches transfers Converse’s sporty, retro style from the foot to the wrist. Inspired by throwback video games, the unisex watches feature a chunky, digital face bordered by color-blocked accents.
