Is there anything on the inside of the duvet cover to hold the comforter in place? What is the material like - is it very thin or is it heavier like a sheet? Can I return it after washing if I am not happy with how it holds up to washing?

No, there are no ties to hold it in place. It's a 100% cotton shell, it's not thin, but not too heavy. You would not be able to return the item after washing. It will hold up as long as you machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry on low.
