The Issue: Preventable Injuries from Improper Footwear
Running shoes serve an important purpose for runners. They provide necessary support for the hard impact to the heels, knees, and ankles that occurs when feet strike the ground, preventing both short- and long-term injuries. Girls on the Run of the Bay Area provides recreational running programs for young girls, many of whom are from low-income backgrounds and cannot afford running shoes. Instead, they often wear fashion shoes such as boots and casual sneakers, which pose a serious risk for injury.
The Campaign: Providing Running Shoes for Girls
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by Girls on the Run of the Bay Area to give new running shoes to girls in its 10-week running program. For every $45 raised, the organization can distribute one new pair of running shoes for one girl. The shoes will help girls run at their full potential without the risk of injuries, ensuring that every girl is able to run on an equal footing, regardless of their socio-economic status.
Girls on the Run of the Bay Area
There's nothing quite like the feeling of flying across the pavement as your feet pound out the rhythm of running. With each jog they take, runners build up strength and stamina—not to mention confidence. Girls on the Run of the Bay Area works to build that confidence in young girls with recreational running programs that serve more than 1,000 girls aged 8–13. The programs meet in small groups twice a week for 10 weeks. Enthusiastic coaches engage the girls in running-based workouts with their peers, and they also address other issues that may affect the girls’ lives, such as nutrition, gossip, and standing up for themselves. At the end of the 10-week session, the girls gather for a noncompetitive 5K running event.
