Drum Corps Associates World Championship Finals
From Jersey to Germany, two dozen of the world's best all-age drum corps fly into Annapolis, Maryland for a 49-year-old tradition of a weekend spectacle of competitive marching tunes for drum and brass. The events will be held at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, located near the United States Naval Academy, with ample parking and spectacular views for fans to see the action. On a nearly unbroken winning streak since 2005, the Reading Buccaneers have an affinity for the classics—past championships have been won with compositions such as Respighi's Pines of the Appian Way, Verdi's Dies Irae, and Rimsky-Korsakov's epic Scheherazade. The only match the Buccaneers didn't win in the last eight years was taken by their rivals the Minnesota Brass, a corps with a more modern aesthetic. Its 2011 winning set included both Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" and John Lennon's "Imagine." The Brass has achieved second place every other year since 2008 with songs by everyone from Duke Ellington to Evanescence. This year's tournament will once again pit the Buccaneers' lush classicism against the Brass' pop and rock adaptations, and also give any number of dark horse acts a chance to steal the show with elaborate formations, spirited musicianship, and the world's largest burlap sack.
