On the eve of the presidential inauguration, the 2013 Green Inaugural Ball corrals political leaders in the fields of conservation, clean technology, and renewable energy to celebrate the environmental successes of the last four years and inspire continual progress. At the black-tie affair––which in 2009 featured celebrity guests Maroon 5, Al Gore, and Melissa Etheridge––attendees can brush elbows with current members of Congress, including Massachusetts House member Ed Markey and Minnesota Senator Al Franken, as they brainstorm about oil alternatives and clean technology.

Later in the evening, guests flock to Newseum’s stage for a plethora of live musical entertainment, including sets by Black Eyed Peas member Will.i.am, who unleashes his smooth lyrical flow on songs from his upcoming album, #willpower. Legendary percussionist Sheila E. unleashes infectious beats using her multipiece drum set and the megaphone installed over her heart, and soul singer Mayer Hawthorne croons tunes such as “The Walk” and “No Strings.” Renowned music producer Onree Gill—who has worked with Alicia Keys, Sade, and Annie Lennox—performs a soulful set with the help of Keys’ band. Rounding out the lineup, Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath and Guns N’ Roses’ Matt Sorum incite slow dancing and deep contemplation with their acoustic guitars.

Other familiar faces scheduled to attend include Washington Redskins football players Darrell Green, Lorenzo Alexander, Kedric Golston, and Chris Wilson, who will be available for autographs, photos, and shoestring tackles. Throughout the event, visitors also can investigate Newseum’s myriad political exhibits, and sample appetizers and libations from the open bar.
