The Scouting Report
For the first time in more than 40 years, the United States hosts the modern pentathlon international championship, which will crown the world's best all-around athlete in an event that traces its roots to the original Olympic games. The competitors must exhibit well-rounded skills in five events: a round-robin fencing tournament, a 200-meter freestyle swimming race, an equestrian show-jumping competition, and a running and pistol-shooting race. Rather than leaving the judgment up to the whims of ancient deities, each of the World Cup's five components is scored with systematically assigned pentathlon points; the athlete who ends up with the most points at the end will be the ultimate champion.
In the first Olympic games, the pentathlon was a trial of valor that tested five skills any superior warrior must possess, including contemporary feats of strength such as wrestling and discus throwing. A few millennia later, the Modern Pentathlon was developed to test the athletic skills of a different era: swimming, equestrian skills, running, pistol shooting, and fencing. A staple in every Summer Games since 1912, the event has since combined the shooting and running competition into one seamless component, forcing athletes to be like politicians and aim toward the center if they want to run.
