Charleston’s resident big-band outfit, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, has often tipped its trumpets to the joint-jumping beats of jazz legend Count Basie and his eponymous orchestra. Celebrating their fifth season, the CJO hone in on Basie’s 1958 milestone of swing: The Atomic Mr. Basie. Maestro horn blower Charlton Singleton directs the ensemble of Chucktown’s finest musicians, guiding them with precision through hard-to-nail Atomic numbers. “Whirly-Bird” soars and dives with razzmatazz brass, and the “The Kid from Red Bank” touts a bass line that creeps and grooves like a spider wearing tap shoes.
