Walk Two Moons
When 13-year-old Salamanaca Tree Hiddle sets out on a cross-country expedition with her grandparents to find her mother, they have one request for her: “How about a story? Tell us a yarn.”
“I could tell you an extensively strange story,” she replies.
With that, Walk Two Moons, based on author Sharon Creech’s Newberry-winning tale, swells into two layers. In one, the tale of Phoebe Winterbottom enraptures both Sal’s grandparents and the audience, touching on the disappearance of the girl’s mother, and a lunatic who may or may not actually be a lunatic. In the other, Sal’s real life unfolds—stories of her mother, Sugar, who recently left Sal and her father for unclear reasons, intertwine with stops in the Badlands and Yellowstone. As Salamanca spins her yarn, the two layers overlap, raising questions about a boy named Ben and a woman named Mrs. Cadaver, and forcing both girls to confront love, mortality, change, family, and friendship. <p>
Books may look like inanimate stacks of paper, but they have stuff inside them. Good stuff. Smart stuff. Compelling stuff. The mission of Prime Stage is to bring that stuff to life. With adaptations that run the gamut from children's classics such as The Westing Game and Walk Two Moons to historical classics such as The Diary of Anne Frank and A Woman Called Truth, the company has spent nearly 20 years bringing literature to the stage.
