A Raisin in the Sun

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?

The question Langston Hughes raised in his poem "Harlem" gave Lorraine Hansberry's seminal play its title, and that dream deferred became its heart, beating at its very center. The historic 1959 play—the first written by a black woman to open on Broadway—opens inside the Younger home on Chicago's south side, where a storm is brewing in close quarters. The family's patriarch has just passed away, and the impending arrival of an insurance check bubbles tensions to the surface of some extremely tense water. Mama Lena wants out of her neighborhood and plans to use the money to buy a new home and fulfill the dream she and her late husband shared. Her children, however, have other ideas—Walter Lee wants to invest in a liquor store, leaving his chauffeuring job behind, while sister Beneatha dreams of furthering her education at medical school.

When Lena surprises everyone by revealing that she's already spent a portion of the $10,000 on a down payment in Clybourne Park, a member of that area's neighborhood association shows up with his billfold to keep it segregated. Strong wills, conflicting desires, and sharp injustice lead the Youngers to confront both the price of their dreams and the strength of the ties that bind them.
