Michael Nesmith has returned, and it's not a prank. For decades, Nesmith—the "brainy one," heir to the Liquid Paper fortune, and pioneer of the music video format—never toured with The Monkees. But after the untimely passing of Davy Jones, he rejoined Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork for a triumphant 2012 tour, which has now flourished into the 2013 "A Midsummer's Night with The Monkees."
Just like the tour's Shakespearean namesake, there's magic, mischief, and at least one person who turns into a donkey when The Monkees are together. Micky practically floats as he drums. Peter grins as he pulls off rope-a-dope basslines. And Michael charms with his 12-string acoustic shimmer and Texas drawl. The lengthy set is a treasure chest of greatest hits, including "Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm a Believer," a raw take on "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone," and an audience sing-along to "Daydream Believer." Eye-loads of rare and unseen film footage project behind the band as they cheerily harmonize through their trove of chart-toppers. But Nesmith claims the show will also be loaded with deeper cuts from the band's pivotal album Headquarters, as well as soundtrack selections from The Monkees' psychedelic cult film, Head.
