In a Nutshell

Innovative choreographer shows off his dancers' skill with new staging of a Shakespeare-inspired classic piece by Mendelssohn

The Fine Print

Without dance, people could only hum along to "Macarena," and Jane Austen characters would be forced to say what was really on their minds. See movements speak with this GrouponLive deal to see Alexandra Ballet’s A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center. For $16, you get one ticket for main-orchestra seating (up to a $33 value, including all fees). Doors open a half hour before each performance. Choose between the following performances:

  • Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, March 10, at 2 p.m.

Prolific choreographer Marek Cholewa leads the dancers of Alexandra Ballet and guest artists from the Kansas City Ballet in new sequences set to Felix Mendelssohn's seminal overture and incidental music. A Midsummer Night's Dream interprets Shakespeare's tale of quarrelling lovers and mischievous fairies with easily flowing dances that use the play of light off dancers' bodies to create stunning tableaux and recharge the solar-powered exit signs. The score ranges from the grand organ swells and trumpet fanfares of the Wedding March to a rustic peasant dance built around a string refrain that imitates the sound of a braying donkey, working with the vibrant motions to keep even littler family members entertained.

Alexandra Ballet

The classically focused Alexandra Ballet entertains audiences with a well-rounded dance diet ranging from contemporary original pieces to traditional masterworks. The company’s agile dancers have pirouetted their way to uproarious applause in past performances that include The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and Peter and the Wolf. Since 2003, the company has enriched the community through its educational-outreach programs, which provide youngsters with free learning materials and ballet performances throughout the school year.
