Always, Pasty Cline

Ever since Louise Seger first heard Patsy Cline on Arthur Godfrey's show, the housewife hounded radio DJs to play the country star's hits. Yet even though she felt a deep connection to the songs and the singer, never in her wildest dreams did she imagine the two would be friends. But four years later fate stepped in. Seger arrived early to a concert in Houston and found Cline traveling alone. The two struck up a conversation that extended over a pot of coffee at Seger's house after the show, and an eventual correspondence that lasted for two years. Then tragedy struck. In 1963 Cline's plane crashed, killing the legend at the young age of 30.

In Always, Patsy Cline, Sally Struthers—the Emmy-winner of All in the Family and Hello, Dolly—plays the roll of Seger, while Carter Calvert of It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues fame fills Cline's boots. The plot, which the Los Angeles Times called "a song-filled valentine," weaves in and out of dialogue between the friends while focusing on the night Seger learns of Cline's death. Throughout, humor and Southern charm mix with more than 20 of Cline's hits, including "Crazy," "Walking After Midnight," and "I Fall to Pieces," performed by Calvert with the help of a five-piece band.

El Portal Theatre

If El Portal Theatre looks familiar, that's because it probably is. The legendary space has starred in Modern Family, Glee, and Last Comic Standing, and has guest starred in dozens of piano-recital nightmares. Built as a vaudeville house in 1926, the venue has earned its celebrity status, welcoming performers such as Jason Alexander, Bea Arthur, and The Manhattan Transfer to its stage over the years. After an extensive renovation, El Portal now boasts three stages that host everything from small comedy shows to Broadway performances.
