The ninth annual American Freedom Festival fills the aptly named Patriot Center with national pride and popular tunes in a concert benefiting and honoring the veterans of America’s armed forces. This year’s show joins two staples of classic-rock radio that share a penchant for hooks and are often confused for landmasses. Chicago, the self-described “rock ‘n’ roll band with horns” drenches its collection of 21 Top 10 hits in sunny brass in a set that modulates between the freewheeling jams of their Chicago Transit Authority beginnings and the concise pop ballads of their ‘80s incarnation. Lee Loughnane's playful trumpet refrain mingles with Robert Lamm's clear baritone and nostalgically tumbling piano during the intro of "Saturday in the Park," and James Pankow's trombone squonks its way into the bridge of "Old Days" amid a bubbling bass line. Fans phonetically sputter the familiar “duh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh” opening of “25 or 6 to 4” and refuse the urge to answer Lamm’s existential question “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” with “It’s 8:02 p.m.”

“Carry on my wayward son”: those five words make up the most iconic lyrics in the career of Kansas, but they could also be a mantra for the band. Nearly four decades out from their 1978 debut album, original members Phil Ehart, Steve Walsh, and Richard Williams keep rolling like a hard-rock tumbleweed, pushed along by the melodic prairie wind of violinist Dave Ragsdale. Bassist Billy Greer completes the quintet, and together they gallivant through the complex arrangements of their prog-rock catalog, from the lobe-buzzing chugger “Fight Fire with Fire” to the symphonic melancholia of “Dust in the Wind.” After 38 years of rock’s ups and downs, the members of Kansas imbue their greatest hits and obscure gems with a hard-won maturity.
