Performance Schedules

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (September 20–October 12)

Andrew Jackson, the United States' seventh commander-in-chief and founder of the modern Democratic party, who still smirks on the $20 bill, receives a makeover as one of the nation's founding rock stars during the musical comedy Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. The rollicking rock musical, which split sides on Broadway recently under the tagline "History Just Got All Sexypants," induces contagious guffaws with its sharp wit and unyielding satire that "oozes political relevance," according to USA Today. At roughly 90 minutes, the same time it takes to train a doorbell to ding-dong in French, the musical blares its first chords during Old Hickory's early days on the Tennessee frontier. The guitar-driven production then follows the charming leader as he woos his wife Rachel and then the nation with a populist campaign that reaps an eight-year term in the White House. Along the way, the play points to past and present political figures who embody the charisma and petulance of a rock star, leading the New York Times to remark, "who better to lead this restless, appetite-driven creature [America] than a red-blooded rock star?"

Little Robert (October 31–November 23)

Though Robert Johnson was a pioneer of the blues whose sound still reverberates in rock and roll today, he enjoyed limited success during his career. Little is known of his brief life, except one legendary, chilling anecdote—many claim that he gained his preternatural guitar skills by making a pact with the devil. In this premiere play by Artie Award-winner Mark Humphrey, the fabled guitarist confronts a certain stranger in his apartment, leading to a conversational battle of wits.

Hatful of Rain (March 6–29)

Johnny Pope may be home for good from the Korean War, but his ordeal is far from over. A stay in a military hospital has left Johnny with a crippling addiction to morphine, and his tendency to stay out all night leads his wife to suspect his fidelity. Artie Award-winning actor Hugh Davis stars opposite Maura Nolan in this play by Academy Award-nominated playwright and actor Michael V. Gazzo.

Shine (April 25–May 17)

In the backwoods of 1960's Tennessee, the McCormick family's secretive distilling of "White Jesus" moonshine has grown into a prolific business. But encounters with the brutal State Line Mob—not to mention a state senator—lead Linus McCormick to question whether to continue the operation at all. Artistic Director and Artie Award-winning playwright Matthew LaChuisa crafts this American ghost story.

In a Nutshell

2013–2014 season includes tales of irreverent history, a devil-dealing blues legend, a morphine-addicted veteran, and a moonshining family
