In a Nutshell

Famed rockabilly guitarist and former Stray Cats frontman leads his swing band through rollicking holiday tunes at this in-the-round theater

The Fine Print

Christmas music embodies the spirit of the season, much like the National Anthem evokes Independence Day and the ambient compositions of Philip Glass reflect the existential angst of Valentine’s Day. Treat ears to Yuletide tunes with this GrouponLive deal to see The Brian Setzer Orchestra’s Christmas Rocks! Extravaganza at Arena Theatre. For $50, you get two tickets for seating in row S, T, or U on Saturday, December 15, at 8 p.m. (up to a $122.50 value, including all fees). Doors open at 7 p.m.

Consummate guitarist Brian Setzer leads his heralded orchestra for an extravaganza of classic Christmas tunes infused with swing-band bombast and rockabilly blitz, all led by Setzer's signature cache of Gretsch and other craftsman guitars. Favorite Yuletide ditties such as "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Run Rudolph Run" reverberate with rollicking percussion, boisterous brass, and the tuba's spot-on whale mating call. The band also tinsels eardrums with a vintage, cool '50s vibe during jazzy seasonal standards such as "Dig That Crazy Santa Claus" and "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus." Before the show ends with a customary candy-cane duel, Setzer may sprinkle his set list with non-holiday fan favorites from his Stray Cats days, including slinky hits such as “Stray Cat Strut” and “Rock This Town.” Mixing jazz, burlesque, pop, and cabaret into sultry Betty Boop harmonies, the theatrical swing band Totsy declares that “Santa Likes Naughty Girls Too” in its charmingly lascivious opening set.

Arena Theatre

At Arena Theatre, nobody sits further than 60 feet from the show. Most concertgoers who’ve squinted their ways through major concerts at other venues can attest that the Arena’s in-the-round seating arrangement and revolving stage are causes for celebration. Since the 1970s, the state-of-the-art circumference has attracted a long list of legendary performers––including Willie Nelson, Tom Jones, and Aretha Franklin––into its intimate performance space. Four full-service bars allow quick access to refreshments, and enclosed parking protects exiting patrons from rainstorms. While sinking into their comfy seats and savoring a flashy light system and stellar acoustics, fans can hear every sound as they discard their unnecessary opera glasses.

The Groupon Guide to: Barbershop Chatter

The barbershop has gained a reputation for being the place to go for listening to all sorts of lively chatter. Here's a sampling of what you might hear your barber say next time you get a haircut:

  • "Take 2 inches off the top? Yep, that's something I can do when these casts come off."

  • "I've been thinking about labeling the scissor jar 'Scissors' and the comb jar 'Not Scissors.' Thoughts?"

  • "Ha! No, this isn't the kind of barbershop that sweeps up the hair clippings."

  • "Someone stole all of our magazines, but you can read this letter I've been meaning to send to my estranged wife."

  • "Welcome to the barbershop, where men are kings and kings are giants and giants are half off before noon."

Why are barbershops called "listen holes"?
