In a Nutshell

The “punk ballerina” continues to push boundaries with a show that invites red-clad audiences on stage to participate

The Fine Print

Dances are often inspired by nature, from the graceful pas de deux of Swan Lake to the intense tap solos of “Help! The floor is lava!” Witness a dancer’s burning passion with this GrouponLive deal to see Mechanics of the Dance Machine by Armitage Gone! Dance at New York Live Arts. For $20, you get one general-admission ticket to the show (up to a $40 value). Choose from the following performances:

  • Thursday, January 31
  • Friday, February 1
  • Saturday, February 2
  • Thursday, February 7
  • Friday, February 8
  • Saturday, February 9

All shows begin at 7:30 p.m.

Taking a characteristically bold step in this dramatic new production, classically trained rebel Karole Armitage invites audiences to enjoy a new perspective on dance with Mechanics of the Dance Machine. Dancers express both electric ferocity and vulnerable intimacy on a stage lit up in variations on a checkerboard pattern. Audience members who choose to interact with the show may stand still or follow the pathway illuminated by the lights, becoming self-aware components of the set. The piece is scored by hip-hop producer and classical composer Gabriel Prokofiev, using selections from his hypnotizing Concerto for Turntable and Orchestra. Those who wish to participate, or who just like the color, should wear all red.

Armitage Gone! Dance

Dubbed “the punk ballerina” for her audacity, ambition, and pure raw talent, Karole Armitage exploded onto the dance scene in 1981 with her groundbreaking work Drastic-Classicism. Since then, the artist has held numerous directorial positions at companies around the world and created genre-bending works inspired by such topics as theoretical physics, 16th-century Florence, and dance. Specializing in an aesthetic as precise as it seems improvised, Armitage and her daring company strive to challenge the preconceived notions of both audiences and the dance establishment.

  • Not ready for prime time
  • Too cool to care
  • Coleslaw belly
  • Grotesque
  • Not enough mustache luster
  • All out of time

What can I do to get more mustache luster? Find out in today's Groupon Guide.
