The arts-and-culture nonprofit group ArtsQuest brightens holiday hearts with one-stop shopping during the 20th season of Christkindlmarkt. An event that “shows why Bethlehem calls itself Christmas City U.S.A.,” according to a 2003 Travel + Leisure review, the annual festivity is held throughout six weeks in two large heated tents filled with aisles near to toppling with artisanal products from more than 125 vendors each week. Relish in the craftspersonship of fine handmade goods such as exotic handcrafted silver and macramé jewelry from Rumi Sumaq; gourmet avian domiciles from Incredible Edible Birdhouses, which feature a coating of seven types of birdseed and a highly exclusive reservation policy; and nostril-pleasing paraffin-wax candles by Little House Candles. While perusing wooden Santas or picking out a live Christmas tree from Hidden Pines Farm, guests can nosh on delicious German and Austrian snacks such as bratwurst and strudel, or soak up the aroma of German roasted almonds.

After perusing the panoply of wares, visitors can test lungs’ artistic ability at the glassblowing booth, where skilled artists show guests the molten silicon ropes while creating beautiful ornaments. The LVPA string ensemble will treat ears to traditional tunes, and Saint Nicholas will be on hand to meet and greet little ones, take holiday-gift requests, and regale them with magical stories of flying reindeer from a snowy land that few have ever seen: Canada. Free parking is available in the lot across the street from PNC Plaza.

ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks

ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks hosts film and performing arts venues on four stories overlooking the dramatically illuminated blast furnaces of the former Bethlehem Steel Plant. On the first floor, the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinema projects independent, foreign, and documentary films on two full-size screens with 100 and 200 stadium-style seats. A full-service bar pours local Yuengling brews and other alcoholic beverages, and onsite chefs craft gourmet eats such as ham-and-brie paninis and beef sliders. Musical acts such as the Psychedelic Furs, Joan Osborne, and Rusted Root perform each weekend at Musikfest Café, where up to 1,000 concertgoers can spread across multiple levels of seating, or form a human pyramid to climb the exposed girders above the stage.
