In a Nutshell

Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Toy Story get remixed with rock, hip-hop, and country hits—plus 25 favorite characters in new outfits

The Fine Print

For decades, there were only two ways to see Disney characters live: visit Disneyland or reprogram the Main Street Parade's GPS to think your address is Sleeping Beauty's castle. Watch Disney come to you with this GrouponLive deal to see Disney Live! Mickey's Music Festival at the Patriot Center in Fairfax. Doors open one hour before showtime. Because the ticket is a G-Pass, Groupon customers can use it to enter the venue directly; they will not need to redeem their Groupon at will call. Choose from the following seating options:

  • For $21, you get one G-Pass for rear 100-level seating in rows U–Z (up to a $28.05 value, including all fees).
  • For $30, you get one G-Pass for front 100-level seating in rows A–T (up to a $39.30 value, including all fees).
  • For $42, you get one G-Pass for VIP floor seating in sections 1–3 (up to a $56.95 value, including all fees).

For either option, choose between the following shows:

  • Sunday, February 24, at 1 p.m.
  • Sunday, February 24, at 4 p.m.

The Plot

Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy bound onto the stage ready to "rock the mouse" with a jam session. Since any object can be a musical instrument (except, of course, the soprano saxophone), Mickey tries to play an old lamp—releasing a familiar blue genie that propels them through three classic stories involving 25 Disney characters. Aladdin's scrappy hero parkours his way through Agrabah's bazaar with the aid of hidden trampolines before whisking Jasmine on a moonlit world tour via flying carpet. The Little Mermaid's Ariel demonstrates her longing for the surface world and lackluster negotiating skills when she trades her voice to Ursula the Sea Witch for a pair of legs. Finally, Woody and Jessie from Toy Story show off their lassoing prowess during a game of Double Dutch—at least until Goofy accidentally catapults them to infinity and beyond, where they must rescue Buzz Lightyear and dodge a meteor shower that bounces into the delighted audience.

The Music

A Lollapalooza in mouse ears, Disney Live! Mickey's Music Festival spices up timeless Disney hits with jolts of pop, hip-hop, swing, reggae, rock, and country. The Daughters of Triton shake their tail fins to "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," and the characters on stage might just as easily rock out to bursts of the Black Eyed Peas, Miami Sound Machine, Aerosmith, Toni Basil, or Sly and the Family Stone. Ursula’s "Poor Unfortunate Souls" gets remixed with a pulsing electro beat, and Aladdin’s "One Jump Ahead" amps up its slithery Arabian backbeat to belly-danceable levels. Throughout the show, audiences are encouraged to sing and dance along to their favorite tunes.

The Sights

Visual ingenuity abounds, from director Fred Tallaksen's phantasmagoric staging to Sam Doty's lighting effects to production designer Rick Papineau's seamless scene transitions. "Under the Sea" plunges the theater into darkness as puppeteers fill the air with phosphorescent marine life. Dancing flamingos mirror the romantic waltz of Ariel and Prince Eric. Woody's horse, Bullseye, even finds an innovative way to jump rope. Adding to the acrobatic spectacle is the chic twist designer Cynthia Nordstrom gives to each of her 299 costumes, whether capping Goofy with a zebra-stripe top hat or accessorizing Minnie with a sequined bow. But her attention to detail shines most brightly in Woody's plastic-mold hair and the precise shade of green used for the phalanx of dancing toy army men.

Due to security restrictions, G-Passes must be printed out and presented in person at the event. They cannot be redeemed through Groupon's mobile app.

The Groupon Guide to: Award-Winning Documentaries

Critics have described this year’s crop of award-winning documentary films as “exciting,” “revelatory,” and “boring in the middle.” Here are the plot summaries for this season’s best documentaries:

  • A man only washes himself with industrial car-wash fluid for an entire year to prove that industrial car-wash fluid is bad for you.

  • A group of preteen world handwriting champions prepare for the greatest challenge yet—signing their own permission slips.

  • A woman who accidentally locked herself in her closet for five years reassimilates to living in the rest of her house.

  • A man who starred in an embarrassing 1980s public-service announcement about the dangers of eating shellfish has his humiliating past dug up by a documentary film crew.

  • A group of people who were born without joints in their toes climbs Mount Kilimanjaro.

  • The terrifying secret about how ice cream is made

  • A bunch of people who did drugs together at an abandoned airplane hangar in the ‘70s get back together to talk about it.

  • One man sets out to expose the problem with the country’s public schools by enrolling his dog in the country’s public schools and seeing if they notice.
