In a Nutshell

Milwaukee roots-rock four-piece promotes its latest album with a live performance highlighting hits from a decades-spanning career

The Fine Print

Going to a concert can deepen your admiration for the musicians, especially during the drummer's 20-minute bottle-feeding of a baby goat. Strengthen your musical bond with this GrouponLive deal to see the BoDeans at Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet. For $25, you get one G-Pass for Saturday, December 29, at 8 p.m. (up to a $56.20 value, including all fees). Best-available seating will be assigned upon purchase. Doors open at 7 p.m. Because the ticket is a G-Pass, Groupon customers can use it to enter the venue directly; they will not need to redeem their Groupon at will call.

Midwestern rock ‘n’ roll workhorses the BoDeans will accept the roots-rock label, but they want to clarify. As frontman Kurt Neumann puts it in the band's bio, “if by ‘roots’ you meant blues, rock, country, and soul all slammed together in one sound, then I’d say yes—that is the sound of American-made music.” The band drives that point home with its 11th studio album, American Made, a song-circle travelogue through the American dream. Throughout bluesy stompers, melodious pop nuggets, and full-bore power-chord rave-ups, the album—and the tour that supports it—summons images of John Steinbeck joyriding in Bob Seger’s car while telling stories of the band’s career.

Formed in 1984 by Kurt Neumann and high-school pal Sammy Llanas, the BoDeans garnered piles of critical acclaim and jury duty notices throughout the following decades. Their feel-good hit “Closer to Free” put them in the national spotlight when it was used as the theme song to the show Party of Five. During the late 1990s, members of the BoDeans disbanded to pursue solo music projects and shepherding internships before reconvening in the early 2000s. Before the band pages through its three-decade-deep songbook onstage, fellow meat-and-potatoes rockers Miles Nielsen and the Rusted kick off the show with an upbeat mash of Brit pop and tumbleweed Americana that would fit right in on The Beatles' Magical Tractor tour.

Rialto Square Theatre

Designed to mimic the French palace of Versailles, Rialto Square Theatre's magnificent interior awes showgoers with its gilded opulence. In the regal inner lobby, a 20-foot, 250-light chandelier—dubbed The Duchess—illuminates a circular series of delicate reliefs that depict allegories of man triumphing through labor and scenes from Greek mythology. A scaled-down replica of Paris's Arc de Triomphe leads from the lobby to the rotunda, adding to the space's grandeur and commemorating miniature Napoleon's victory at the adorable Battle of miniature Austerlitz.

The Groupon Guide to: Award-Winning Documentaries

Critics have described this year’s crop of award-winning documentary films as “exciting,” “revelatory,” and “boring in the middle.” Here are the plot summaries for this season’s best documentaries:

  • A man only washes himself with industrial car-wash fluid for an entire year to prove that industrial car-wash fluid is bad for you.

  • A group of preteen world handwriting champions prepare for the greatest challenge yet—signing their own permission slips.

  • A woman who accidentally locked herself in her closet for five years reassimilates to living in the rest of her house.

  • A man who starred in an embarrassing 1980s public-service announcement about the dangers of eating shellfish has his humiliating past dug up by a documentary film crew.

  • A group of people who were born without joints in their toes climbs Mount Kilimanjaro.

  • The terrifying secret about how ice cream is made

  • A bunch of people who did drugs together at an abandoned airplane hangar in the ‘70s get back together to talk about it.

  • One man sets out to expose the problem with the country’s public schools by enrolling his dog in the country’s public schools and seeing if they notice.
