In a Nutshell

Grammy-winning rockers Evanescence team up with alternative-metal stalwarts Chevelle, Halestorm, Cavo, and New Medicine

The Fine Print

A touring rock band endures its fair share of discomforts, from interminable bus rides to the cold, cast-iron bed sheets of "rock-star-proof" hotel rooms. Discover why they love doing it with this GrouponLive deal to see the Carnival of Madness, featuring Evanescence and Chevelle, at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. For $25, you get one G-Pass for general admission on Sunday, August 26, at 5 p.m. (up to a $51.80 value, including all fees). Doors open at 4 p.m. Because the ticket is a G-Pass, Groupon customers can use it to enter the venue directly; they will not need to redeem their Groupon at will call.

With two Grammy awards, two multiplatinum records, and a sound described by the Los Angeles Times as "pain-soaked pleasure," Evanescence left a mosh-pit-size void in the rock world when the band decided to go on a five-year hiatus. Pictures of the band were taken off milk cartons last year when it returned to rock-radio dominance with its latest, self-titled album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Evanescence has since been relentlessly spreading its heavy, passionate songs around the world while on tour. Lead singer Amy Lee wears her heart on her sleeve as her crystalline voice soars over chugging riffs in classics such as “Bring Me to Life” and “Call Me When You’re Sober,” as well as newer hits, including “My Heart Is Broken.” Three-piece rockers Chevelle rev audiences’ engines with a stripped-down brand of metal that sets itself apart with songs both crunchy and catchy, ranging from the emotionally vulnerable "Send the Pain Below" to the jaded, anti-exploitation "Face to the Floor." Three more acts pack the evening's amp-shattering lineup, including the female-fronted Halestorm, Minneapolis rockers New Medicine, and post-grunge thumpers Cavo.

Due to security restrictions, G-Passes must be printed out and presented in person at the event. They cannot be redeemed through Groupon's mobile app.

The Groupon Guide to: Grandfather Clocks

Contrary to popular belief, grandfather clocks aren’t clocks that had to move into the downstairs bedroom of your house because they have a bad hip and can’t get around so well these days. They’re actually beautiful and masterfully crafted timekeepers. Get the scoop on big clocks with this guide:

  • Grandfather clocks have a tall base so that they can be seen over the heads of houseguests lingering late into the night and household residents who aren’t supposed to be out of bed at that hour.

  • The ticking sound a grandfather clock emits each second reminds its owner of how swiftly time passes, time that could have been spent getting a sound night’s sleep.

  • The only person to ever successfully open a grandfather clock didn’t find any gears inside, just a list of men who were too busy wasting their time to be successful.

  • The White House has a famous grandfather clock called The Honorability. Little-known, single-term president Franklin Pierce once said of it, “I know that clocks can’t actually form opinions or frown disapprovingly, but that overgrown wristwatch is judging me and I’m going to kill it.”

Which US president killed a grandfather clock?
