Superstition dictates that instead of wishing actors "good luck," you should tell them to "break a leg" or "stir me with your acting, you beautiful beast." Ben Rimalower’s Patti Issues
Traditionally an off-Broadway director, Ben Rimalower steps out from behind the curtain to make his onstage debut in Patti Issues, a show that the New Yorker calls “endearing” as well as “drolly written and performed with heaps of charisma.” After his father comes out of the closet and spirals into drug abuse, 8-year-old Rimalower finds solace in the world of musical theater, particularly the works of Broadway legend Patti LuPone. During the one-man show, Rimalower contrasts his estranged relationship with his father with his devotion for the veteran star, prompting Huffington Post Entertainment to herald it as “a pithy and unforgettable depiction of how a child’s need for love and for a role model can get oddly channeled elsewhere when those needs aren’t more directly supplied.” But perhaps the most meaningful praise comes from LuPone herself, who told Playbill.com, “I was moved … He’s a very talented man and I’m so proud of him.”
The Duplex Cabaret Theatre
When guests at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre settle into its intimate seating, their gazes fixate on the same stage where legendary artists Barbra Streisand and Woody Allen have performed. The 50-year-old establishment continues to draw both established and up-and-coming artists, and has even premiered Broadway shows such as Nunsense when all of Broadway was closed for repairs.
