In a Nutshell

Sports celebrities mingle with event attendees while live music fills the air; proceeds benefit youth baseball programs

The Fine Print

Christmas is a special time of year—families gather together, gifts are exchanged, and trees finally have a purpose. Celebrate the season with this Groupon: for $110, you get adult admission for two to the Bethesda Baseball Holiday Auction, along with a season passes for up to six (a $225 value). The auction takes place Sunday, December 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the DoubleTree hotel in Bethesda. The group season pass is good for every Bethesda Big Train baseball game in the upcoming season, for up to six attendees per game.

The Bethesda Baseball Holiday Auction spreads year-end cheer to both event attendees and youth baseball programs with a festive sports soiree. Bands fill the air with live music as celebrity guests, such as Steve Lombardozzi and Teddy Roosevelt of the Washington Nationals and Tim Kurkjian of ESPN, mingle with noncelebs, munching on complimentary cuisine and sharing their best baseball-bat impressions.

Throughout the evening, attendees have the opportunity to bid on a number of sports memorabilia and experiences, including: lunch with Washington Redskins linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, baseballs signed by Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals, a one-on-one basketball lesson with Walt "The Wizard" Williams, and a game ball used in Super Bowl XXXV, signed by Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens. All proceeds from the auction will support the club's efforts to rebuild local youth ball fields and promote youth baseball.

The Groupon Guide to: Harebrained Schemes

These days it seems like everyone has some kind of harebrained get-rich-quick scheme. Use this handy guide to sort out whether a scheme is destined for failure or straight for the bank:

Scheme: Your neighbor Robert wants you to open a flower shop with him.
Verdict: Harebrained. Robert inherited the flower shop from his father, but in order to keep the shop’s best customer, Mrs. Winifred Downing, you’ll have to pretend that Robert’s father is still alive and court Mrs. Downing in his guise.

Scheme: Your boyfriend, Calvin, wants to get married.
Verdict: Harebrained. Calvin will use the marriage as a contract to bind you together both financially and spiritually. Once you’ve signed the paperwork, Calvin can move into your house and even use your toilet.

Scheme: Your older cousin, Harrison, wants to build an airplane in the front yard and charge local children to take rides in it.
Verdict: Legitimate. This is a business opportunity you won’t want to pass up, just to see every other family in the neighborhood raking in money with their front-yard aeronautics companies. Sign over all of your bank accounts and government bonds to Harrison as soon as possible.

Look at those children having fun in that raft on the roof!
