What happens when a wrongfully imprisoned man attempts to live a normal life after 17 years in lockup? Theatregoers immerse themselves in the gripping outcome during Chad Beckim’s After, a drama described by John J. Accrocco of Newcity Stage as a “ninety-minute pressure cooker...sure to move audiences.” Originally produced at Profiles Theatre’s own space in the fall, After comes to the Beverly Arts Center as part of their Professional Theater Series for a remount. Throughout the performance, Monty’s fragile nature comes to light as he attempts to reassimilate into modern culture and patch up old relationships, showing crowds why the play garnered a Jeff recommendation and led Hedy Weiss of the Chicago Sun-Times to award the “searing portrait of one man’s struggle” with a Highly Recommended rating.

Profiles Theatre

Founded in 1988, Profiles Theatre was “formed as an actor-driven theatre ensemble dedicated to creating provocative and emotionally truthful productions.” They have since staged a number of edgy world, U.S., and Midwest premieres such as Graceland, Men of Tortuga, and the Jeff Award-winning Killer Joe. In their 2007-08 season, the ensemble made Chicago storefront history by dedicating a whole season to the works of controversial playwright and filmmaker Neil LaBute. Profiles spreads their productions across two theaters—The Main Stage and the smaller Alley Stage—allowing them to put on plays that range from technically demanding productions to intimate performances.

The Groupon Guide to: Valentine's Day Leftovers

For some people, the most difficult thing about Valentine's Day is deciding what to do with all the leftovers. Here are some suggestions of what to do with the day-after detritus:

  • Melt down chocolates and put them in little ghost-shaped molds to start stocking up for Halloween.

  • Once roses start to wilt and dry out, use their thorns to make devil horns for a naughty dog or precocious toddler.

  • Diamond shavings are glitter.

  • Recycle a Valentine's Day card by crossing out the part that says "Lisa, I will always love you. You are my angel and my strength" and writing "Deepest sympathies on the anniversary of your terrible comeuppance!"

  • Leftover candy hearts? More like delicious croutons!

Sweet croutons, this salad is good!
