The Fine Print

Movies can show us things we'd never see in real life, such as alien worlds, talking animals, or teenagers making a difference. Marvel at the inconceivable with this GrouponLive deal to the Bloody Hero International Film Festival, held at Phoenix Center for the Arts on Friday, February 8, through Sunday, February 10. Choose between the following options:

  • For $25, you get two single-day passes (a $50 value).
  • For $35, you get one three-day pass, which includes access to the Kickoff Mixer with filmmakers and industry pros on February 8 from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. (a $70 value).

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

In its inaugural run, the Bloody Hero International Film Festival spans three days of shorts and features collected from around the world, celebrating the struggle and glory of independent filmmaking. As a forum for art that has evaded the mainstream, the festival places few restrictions on the genres and content of its selections, judging them by their quality rather than by their budgets or numbers of helicopter chases. Multiple screening suites let viewers take in a barrage of short films—some of them less than five minutes long, in the “short shorts” category—or settle in for feature-length movies. This year’s official selections include Agon, the story of two Albanian brothers as they try to make a living in Greece, and Underbelly Blues, a dark, Tarantino-inspired comedy in which a cast of criminals find their lives connected by bizarre circumstances.

The Groupon Guide to: Still-Life Painting

Still-life paintings are the easiest kind to do because everything you’re painting is already dead, thus holding still. Try out these subjects for your next still life:

  • A skull being used as a vase
  • A bunch of mangoes in a bowl but one of them is purple
  • Two teakettles. They don’t have faces, but do they somehow seem to be … talking to each other?
  • Onions
  • The bust of an ancient emperor sitting on a little girl’s nightstand
  • A wooden table strewn with a bunch of dead quail
  • A harpsichord gathering dust in a corner while a shiny electric guitar sits, well cared for, in a stand
  • A man’s hat, pipe, and book all sit on his chair, which has the imprint of his body, but there is no sign of the man.
  • A bunch of absurdly wet fruit

What can you do with a bunch of absurdly wet fruit?
