For two days, Bryant Park’s band shell hosts a full lineup of notable blues musicians during the first annual Blues, Brews & BBQ festival. On Saturday night, slide guitar guru Bill “Sauce Boss” Wharton spouts culinary-inspired lyrics with a guttural growl, all while clad in his signature chef getup. A wireless microphone, partially hidden beneath his billowy chef cap, enables him to move freely about the stage while shredding through note-bending guitar solos and the slabs of barbecued ribs thrown onto the stage by his fans. Victor Wainwright and The WildRoots close the festival on Sunday night with their original boogie-piano-blues tunes and renditions of classic soul songs. As Victor rolls through piano solos, his two-piece brass band shimmies side to side, belting out glass-clear high notes along to the thumping beat of a finger-picked bass. While head-bobbing along with live blues musicians, guests can snack on sauce-slathered BBQ or sip on brews purchased from onsite vendors.
