To kick-start Thanksgiving weekend, some of the grittiest hardcore, metal, and gothic-rock acts descend on Bogart’s stage for two nights of blistering guitars, thundering drums, and thrashing mosh pits. On Tuesday, headliners Motionless In White blast the tattoos off their audience with controversy-courting, high-octane anthems. Frontman Chris Motionless skewers hypocrisy, screaming in a rage-choked, guttural roar, and ponders the dichotomy of good and evil in “Creatures,” a Marilyn Manson–esque hard-hitter as jolting and existential as a self-aware Tesla coil. Joining Motionless In White are the fellow headbangers and authority-defiers of Chelsea Grin, who wail with punkish timbre over rusty guitar riffs and two-ton drums on “Sonnet of the Wretched,” and Stick To Your Guns, a hardcore outfit out of Orange County.
On Wednesday, the AP Tour, presented by Alternative Press, brings more eardrum-bursting rock in an evening headlined by Miss May I, the heavy-metal workers heard on such soundtracks as Saw VI and Saints Row: The Third. Levi Benton’s monstrous vocals lend raspy weight to instrumental harmonics on “Hey Mister” off the band’s new album, At Heart, and bassist Ryan Neff contributes lyrics in a cleaner, more polished tone. Also appearing are The Ghost Inside (formerly A Dying Dream), whose melodic hardcore mingles throat-scraping screams with a purer-sounding, layered chorus, and Like Moths to Flames, whose new jam “The Worst In Me” hinges on the nihilistic lament repeated in the chorus: “I never wanted to be loved by anyone.”
