In a Nutshell

British quartet blends haunting vocals and folk-electronic sound with moving lyrics

The Fine Print

Nothing can match the thrill of seeing a concert in person, not even watching it on high-definition Blu-ray or listening to it on a high-definition parrot. Get out of your cage with today’s GrouponLive deal to see Bombay Bicycle Club with special guests Vacationer and Sports & Leisure at House of Blues New Orleans. For $12, you get one ticket for general admission on Monday, October 8, at 8 p.m. (up to a $24 value, including all fees). Doors open at 7 p.m.

Most of the people dreaming of fame in London this summer were athletes. But the four members of British indie band Bombay Bicycle Club seized their performance at the end of the 2012 London Games as a chance to add more admirers to their rapidly growing fan base (not to mention share the stage with icons The Specials and New Order). The quartet—three members of which began playing music together at age 15, when they had to use fake IDs just to buy guitars—builds a dreamy, folk-electronic sound buoyed by Jack Steadman’s moving vocals and poetic lyrics hinted at by song titles such as “How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep” and album names such as I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose. Guitar and vocal melodies loop, echo, and jangle before erupting in the occasional flash of arena-sized intensity.

Joining Bombay Bicycle Club is Vacationer, whose soothingly trip-hoppy tracks are shot through with lilting harmonies and muted record scratches. Local sextet Sports & Leisure adds a fusion of folk, pop, soul, and indie rock to the mix, inciting introspective dancing during an energetic live set.

House of Blues New Orleans

At home in the French Quarter, the House of Blues New Orleans keeps its heritage ever near with a metal box of mud from the Mississippi Delta hidden beneath its stage. Around this, more than 290 pieces of folk art—one of the largest collections in the country—decorate the walls and cover up the evidence of indoor shot-put practice. Also bringing its Southern charm and homestyle feel are hardwood floors, no fewer than three bars, and two levels for concert viewing.

The Groupon Guide to: Inspiration

Inspiration is everywhere, if you know where to look. What are some sure-fire ways to shatter writer's block and unleash the creative torrents within?

• Observe natural phenomena, such as a rainbow or a sheep slipping in some mud.
• Write down everything that happens in your favorite movie, but make it about … yourself?
• Watch the free-flowing imaginations of two children crafting a complex pretend universe—this can inspire you to comment on what a waste of time it was.
• Put on some jazz records and listen to the notes they're not playing. These inaudible notes aren't copyrighted, and they can be yours!
• Drink a whole thing of coffee. Even if this makes things immeasurably worse, at least you technically finished something today.
