Live theater tends to be more thrilling than film, largely due to the heightened odds of seeing someone flub a line or deliver a stirring monologue while sitting in your lap. For $39, you get one ticket (up to a $78.75 value, including all fees). Doors open one hour before each performance. Choose from the following seating and showtime options:

Transporting its magical fairy-tale world from screen to stage, Shrek The Musical plops a lovable ogre's swamp and a beautiful princess's castle into the historical California Theatre. Audience members' imaginations will cast off into Shrek's faraway kingdom, framed onstage by the theater's own ornate architecture. As Shrek and Donkey outduel the irksome Lord Farquaad for Fiona's affections, 19 all-new songs highlight the story's hilarity, drama, and instructions for achieving a lime-green complexion.

Pinocchio and a team of other disgruntled fairy-tale characters belt out an anthem for originality with "Freak Flag," and in a final showdown at the Cathedral of Duloc, Shrek airs his true feelings in a reprise of "Big Bright Beautiful World." Hearts of all ages will cheer for Fiona to find her true love's first kiss, as the irreverent cast of characters escorts her and her charming ogre to a happily-ever-after finale that, for once, does not involve catapulting the villain off into the sunset.

California Theatre of the Performing Arts

A former vaudeville performance space and movie palace built in 1928, the California Theatre of the Performing Arts hearkens back to a bygone era with its majestic Wurlitzer organ, which is played during silent film programs, and a time portal linked to the childhood home of Alexander Pantages. The theatre’s deep-red stage curtains and ornate, vaulted ceilings steep the senses in a vintage ambiance, while the heartfelt scenes that unfold on its stage make the space seem much cozier than a 1,718-seat auditorium has any right to.

The Groupon Guide to: Blowing Kisses

Any love-struck fool can form a crude pucker and exhale over an open palm, but it takes a true master to pull off any of these advanced kiss-blowing maneuvers:

  • The Train Whistle
  • The Heart-Shaped Puff
  • The Over-the-Shoulder Bolder Smolder
  • The Taste the Rainbow (Skittles trickle out)
  • The Take Back JK Here You Go Don’t Cry
  • The Silent but Deadly but Romantic
  • The Indecent Proposal (blows wedding ring directly onto finger)

Have you ever blown anyone a kiss? Not like this, I bet.
