The Fine Print

Laughter has healing power, especially after you've watched a sad film or seen a sad person fall down. Laugh at a professional with this GrouponLive deal to the Celebrity Holiday Celebration at The Club in Burbank on Friday, December 14. For $30, you get two general-admission tickets to the party, which starts at 8 p.m. (up to a $53.24 value, including all fees).

Hosted by Karlie Redd of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta reality-show renown, a dazzling menu of rising Chicagoland talents get merry with gut-busting laughs and toe-tapping tunes. Passing the mic around and filling it with his own jokes is comedian Damon Williams, known across the suburbs and urbs alike as the emcee of traveling showcase Funny First Saturdays. Willie Taylor, former member of Day26 from Diddy’s Making the Band, sits at the top of the musical lineup alongside LakeShore, a boy-boy-girl group that weaves old-fashioned R & B harmonies and comes championed by Syleena Johnson, one of TV One’s R&B Divas. Tommie B, SandyRedd, and Malone began their careers as background vocalists for Johnson, who acts as a musical mentor in the studio, a tireless promoter for their stage show, and a cat herder for their kitty-drawn tour bus. 107.5 FM DJ Demi Lobo shares hosting duties as she keeps the good cheer flowing through performances by a half-dozen other singers, rappers, and DJs—including high-energy sibling duo Full Circle Clique, whom Chicagoans may have seen opening for Nicki Minaj. Guests are invited to bring toys for a children's gift drive; everyone who donates a plaything will be entered into a drawing to win cash prizes or a flat-screen TV.

The Club

A space as suave as the sounds that often spill from its stage, The Club brings a big-city, but still comfortable, ambience to Chicago’s southwest suburbs. The sprawling venue might feel like a straightforward dance club, an unusually chic banquet hall, or a laid-back living room without all the old magazines and abandoned coffee mugs, depending on which of its spaces you’re wandering through. Violet lights play off leather couches, plywood floors, and velvet seats that wouldn’t look out of place in a sidewalk café. Translucent drapes and alien-looking chandeliers dangle from exposed rafters, ensuring that even the space’s industrial touches are softened by an eclectic, personality-packed vibe.

The Groupon Guide to: Award-Winning Documentaries

Critics have described this year’s crop of award-winning documentary films as “exciting,” “revelatory,” and “boring in the middle.” Here are the plot summaries for this season’s best documentaries:

  • A man only washes himself with industrial car-wash fluid for an entire year to prove that industrial car-wash fluid is bad for you.

  • A group of preteen world handwriting champions prepare for the greatest challenge yet—signing their own permission slips.

  • A woman who accidentally locked herself in her closet for five years reassimilates to living in the rest of her house.

  • A man who starred in an embarrassing 1980s public-service announcement about the dangers of eating shellfish has his humiliating past dug up by a documentary film crew.

  • A group of people who were born without joints in their toes climbs Mount Kilimanjaro.

  • The terrifying secret about how ice cream is made

  • A bunch of people who did drugs together at an abandoned airplane hangar in the ‘70s get back together to talk about it.

  • One man sets out to expose the problem with the country’s public schools by enrolling his dog in the country’s public schools and seeing if they notice.
