Rick Ross, a Def Jam recording artist, skilled rapper, and founder of Maybach Music Group, appropriately headlines the night with a thunderous voice and intimidating stature. Ross began his formidable career as a key player in Miami's underground rap scene before his hit single “Hustlin',” from 2006’s Port of Miami, transformed him into a buzzworthy hip-hop heavyweight. Knowledgeable in the ways of lacing meaning into his beats, Ross fills tracks such as “B.M.F.” and “Valley of Death” with lessons—sometimes self-deprecating—learned from previous periods of his life, such as when he served as a correctional officer. Last summer, he added to his gaudy treasury of rhymes with God Forgives, I Don’t, which Consequence of Sound said “puts more imagination into single couplets than most rappers do into entire verses,” making for “one of the most lyrically interesting major-label rap albums in recent memory.”
