Heading into their third season as Charlotte's hometown hockey team, the Checkers take on three of their Western Conference rivals in the American Hockey League. As the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes, the team features a roster of potential NHL stars, including wingmen Chris Terry, who led the team in 2011–12 with 59 points, and Jerome Samson, who donned a Canes jersey for 16 games last season, scoring two goals despite being new to the NHL's 400-pound pucks.

As fans seated directly behind the boards lend their support by drawing up backwards plays on the fogged-up glass, mascot Chubby entertains the crowd by dancing and riding four-wheelers on the ice at intermission.
