The Scouting Report

Seeking to reprise their 2005 World Series victory, the White Sox are set to light up the skies as they face off against American League foes during the final month of the regular season. The team has established itself as a top competitor in the AL Central, vying neck-and-neck with the Detroit Tigers since April for the division's top spot. On the mound, Cy Young candidate Chris Sale has maintained an ERA near 2.50, earning him AL Pitcher of the Month accolades in May and a lifetime-achievement award from his elementary-school gym teacher. On the slugging side, first baseman Paul Konerko surpassed 400 career home runs this season while maintaining an impressive batting average well above .300. Designated hitter Adam Dunn and pitcher Jake Peavy joined Sale and Konerko in July to represent the Sox on the AL All-Star team, which salutes the league's most competent astrologers.

Ninety minutes before the game—and for 30 minutes following the first pitch—fans file onto the patio to soak up the sounds of warm-ups, the smell of barbecued meats, and the refreshment of wine and Miller beer on the right-center-field warning track. In accordance with intergalactic baseball law, revelers must be at least 21 to drink alcohol, but younger fans may gobble to their hearts’ content at a barbecue buffet replete with fried chicken, Cajun chicken, warm-up rounds of the chicken dance, and more.

Chicago White Sox

After occupying the old Comiskey Park for more than 80 years, the Chicago White Sox moved to their eponymous 40,000-seat stadium in 1991, later redubbed U.S. Cellular Field. Over the course of the club's rich history, it’s managed to produce more than two dozen Hall of Famers, and its mascot, Southpaw, has long since held onto the naïve hope that he too will be inducted. In 2005, the White Sox rode eight consecutive postseason victories to their first World Series title since 1917, snapping an 88-year championship drought. And today, the team continues to excite fans as they enjoy field amenities that include street-festival-worthy concessions, an onsite sports bar, and an array of batting cages and baseball clinics.

The Groupon Guide to: Barrels of Animals

History’s greatest poets and philosophers have all relied on one infallible metric in the construction of their most enduring metaphors—comparing things to barrels of different animals. Penetrate their heady linguistic flourishes with this clear-cut guide to animal-barrel metaphors.

  • Barrel of: Monkeys
  • Symbolizes: Imminent, inescapable fun
  • Use it in a sentence: “The new hit movie Scream 4 is more fun—and scarier—than a barrel of monkeys!”

  • Barrel of: Fish

  • Symbolizes: How easy it would be to accomplish a given task, in comparison to cornering fish in an enclosed space and hunting them with a gun
  • Use it in a sentence: “Chucking shurikens into this oil drum full of lobsters will be slightly harder than shooting fish in a barrel!”

  • Barrel of: One man

  • Symbolizes: A whimsical look at Depression-era poverty
  • Use it in a sentence: “There’s nothing metaphorical about the crisis of poverty.”

What is literally as fun as a barrel of monkeys?
