The Program

To warm up the frigid Sunday afternoon, the CWE joins with accomplished saxophonist Mark Harris, who has played with everyone from Natalie Cole to Roger Waters and the Lamont Saxophone Quartet.

  • Colgrass – Dream Dancer: Of Colgrass' 2001 composition, the Boston Globe wrote, "...the music felt—and you do feel Colgrass' music—gorgeous, dramatic, compelling. ‘Dream Dancer’ issues a promissory note for an even more exciting century for this exciting medium."
  • Mackey – The Frozen Cathedral: Dedicated to the memory of a friend's late son, Mackey based the music around Alaska's majestic Mount McKinley—a place loved by the boy.
  • Puts/Spede – Millennium Canons: Puts' celebratory piece was written to herald the new millennium, despite its misleading title.
  • Kuster – Lost Gulch Lookout: A Boulder native, composer Kristin Kuster took inspiration from the jagged, gritty landscape where she grew up, resulting in an athletic composition of dissonance and beauty.
  • Ticheli – Blue Shades: This classical composition playfully manipulates the conventions of blues, jazz, and big-band music.

Colorado Wind Ensemble

"A wind ensemble is much like a traditional concert band," explains the Colorado Wind Ensemble on their website, "but each musician plays more as a soloist within a large group rather than as one member of a large section playing the same part." That approach folds neatly into the group's mission: to create opportunities for performers to share their talents, while also presenting programs that entertain audiences. To that end, their concerts encompass a wide range of musical styles and eras, from Renaissance and Baroque club hits to military marches and contemporary arrangements. It's proven a winning combination—the ensemble has engaged listeners for more than 30 seasons.
